Eugene R. Drozd, 76, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at home with his family by his side. He was born August 2, 1935 in Hallettsville, Texas to Rudolph and Sophia Cada Drozd. Gene married his school sweetheart, Lucille Ludwig on October 7, 1957 at the Moravia Ascension Catholic Church.

Gene served in the U.S. Army stationed in Korea from July 1958 – July 1960. Besides his official duties that earned the rank of sergeant, Gene started his music entertainment by playing guitar and singing to the troops. Returning to Hallettsville, he continued his employment with Modern Appliance until he and Lucille opened Gene's Appliance Company December 1, 1972. Through General Electric, they enjoyed trips to Hawaii, London, Spain and the Caribbean.

Gene also continued his love of music by playing with the Pearl Ramblers, then in the 60's, Homer and Gene & The Westerners began a long career playing country music across South Texas. They were honored to provide "back up" for Artists; Mel Street, Charlie Walker, Darrell McCall, Gene Watson, Jamey Ryan, Wanda Jackson and Jimmy C. Newman. He was not asked to appear on the Grand Ole Opry but had the dazzling jackets and pointed boots ready. Gene did however, stand side by side with Tammy Wynette, Buck Owens and Loretta Lynn. Although band members changed over the years, Gene cherished his time on stage with them all.

Gene was active in his community with years of service and held various officer positions within the Chamber of Commerce, Lavaca County Crime Stoppers, Lions Club and the County Museum. He provided sound equipment for countless events including the Lions Club Carnival, Jr. Livestock Show, County Fair and Christmas Lighting Ceremony.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lucille Ludwig Drozd; son, Ronald Drozd and wife Sherry; daughter, Kim Rother and husband Mark; grandchildren, Natalie, Mandie & Logan Drozd, Cory & Garrett Rother.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marjorie Drozd Belicek.

A Memorial service will be held Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 2:00 pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Hallettsville.
