Elmo J. Pollock, 97, of Hallettsville, left this world August 13, 2020 in San Augustine, Texas. He was born March 23, 1923 in Sweet Home, Texas, to Robert J. and Alta Mae (Quota) Pollock. He graduated from Yoakum High School in 1939 and joined the U.S. Army in 1940. In September, 1942, he married Dorothy Marie Schulte of Hallettsville, his loving wife until her death in 1998
While in the Army, he served with the 69th Coast Artillery Regiment and the 440th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion as a unit and battalion clerk, and as platoon sergeant. After his medical discharge in 1944, he worked for the International Great Northern Railroad in Houston, Texas. In 1945, he moved to Texas City where he began a 38 year career with the Texas City Terminal Railway Company. When he retired in 1983, he was manager of Property and Purchasing. He survived the 1947 disaster in Texas City when the steamship SS Grand Camp, loaded with cotton, ammunition, and ammonium nitrate, exploded, killing approximately 600 people.
During his lifetime, he gave back to his community. He was a member of the Texas City Chamber of Commerce and the Evening Optimist Club where he served as president in 1964 and was a delegate to the international convention in Toronto, Canada. He served as business manager for a Junior Achievement Club, a program for high school students that met and formed a company, elected officers, sold stock, produced and sold a product, paid a dividend, and dissolved the company at the end of the school year. He was one of the founders of Little League baseball in Texas City and a coach of one of the first teams organized. In 1989 he and Dorothy returned to Hallettsville. In Hallettsville, he was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 2423, and American Legion Post 230. Due to declining health he entered Stevens Nursing and Rehab Center in Hallettsville, and then, in 2017, moved to Colonial Pines Healthcare Center in San Augustine, Texas.
He is survived by: his sons, Ronald & wife Linda of Bullard, Texas, Darrell of La Marque, Texas, and Hal & wife Jean of Dickinson, Texas; brother-in-law Alan Schulte & wife Jerri of Aqua Dulce, Texas; sister-in-law Irene (Kanak) Schulte of Hallettsville; grandchildren, David Pollock & wife Cheryl of Victoria, Texas, Richard Pollock & wife Tami of Alvin, Texas, Michael Pollock & wife Katy of Santa Fe, Texas, and Melissa Chadd & husband Jim of Brenham, Texas; great grandchildren, Denise Farias, Taylor Pollock, Courtney Chadd, Madelyn Chadd, Marianne Pollock and Davy Pollock; and great-great grandchildren, Tucker Farias and Aliah Hernandez.
In addition to his wife, Dorothy, he was preceded in death by parents; his brothers, Harvey of Belvedere, Illinois and Preston of Jacksonville, Texas, and his sister Elaine Owen of Texas City, Texas.
Funeral Mass Service (All attendees must wear masks): 11 am, Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville; with Rosary starting at 10:30 am; and Visitation starting at 9 am. Pallbearers: his sons and grandsons will be pall bearers. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church or donor's choice. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
