Edna Earl
Rains

She graduated from Hallettsville High School and was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Hallettsville. Edna Earl attended Music Conservatory in Houston, Texas after graduation. She was a telephone operator with Bell Telephone until she married L.J. "Buck" Rains, Jr. June 27, 1941, in her parents' home. Edna Earl and L.J. traveled with Shell Oil Company until L.J. joined the Army Air Forces in October of 1942. They were stationed at Ellington Field, Massachusetts. After an injury in final combat training as an aerial gunner on a bomber, L.J was honorably discharged as a Corporal in 1945. L.J. returned to Shell Oil Company to become Party Chief of Survey Party 3.
On September 3, 1947, Edna Earl gave birth to her first and only child, Shelly Michael Rains in Hallettsville, Texas. The family continued traveling with Shell Oil Company until 1955, when they returned to Hallettsville. In 1961, L.J. opened his own company, Rains Surveying. Edna Earl worked as his personal secretary until she retired in 1977.
Edna Earl was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Hallettsville. She played the piano for the church choir until 91 years of age. She participated in bible study and many church events throughout her lifetime. She was a strong Christian role model to her family and is remembered for her faith in God.
In Hallettsville, she was a member of the Reading Club, Garden Club, and Women's Missionary Union of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading and completing crossword puzzles on a daily basis.
She moved to Georgetown in 2004 with her family where she later became a resident of The Wesleyan Retirement Home. She continued playing the piano until she was 93 years of age.
Edna Earl is survived by: her son, Mike Rains and wife Cathy of Georgetown; granddaughters, Kim Greenwell and husband Steven of Magnolia and Windi Michal and husband Matt of Georgetown; great, grandchildren Madison and Micah Greenwell and Caden and Samantha Michal; nephew, Jimmy Brown of Gretna, Louisiana; nieces, Leslie Hart of Marrero, Louisiana, and Pat Broaddus of Cameron, Texas.
Funeral Service: 10 am, Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 5 pm, Monday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. Terry Horton. Pallbearers: Joe Clark, Matt Michal, Steven Greenwell, Jimmy Brown, Herschel Schulte, and Dr. John Hart. Honorary Pallbearers: Bob Edwards and Rev. Dwight Reagan. Memorials: First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund. Burial: Hallettsville City Cemetery.
