Obituary

Dorothy Lorene Young Skelton, 80, of Hallettsville, passed away Oct. 31, 2014. She was born on Nov. 28, 1933, Thanksgiving Day, to Bernie & Ollie Mae Young in Springtown, TX. She met the love of her life, Lloyd Skelton, at church on her 18th birthday. He was the only date she ever had, and they were married in less than a year on October 3rd, 1952, in Springtown.

Lorene worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co for a short time. In 1973, she then went to work in the District Clerks Office where she worked for 15 years and then retired.

Lorene was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Hallettsville. She also was a member of the City Cemetery Association. In her younger years, she was involved in the PTO, Little League, and Cub Scouts.

Lorene's grandchildren recount many precious memories of their beloved grandmother showing them acts of love and kindness. These sweet memories range from her making them chocolate milk when they awoke early in the morning, providing them with generous amounts from the "tooth fairy", and watching her favorite movie "The Sound of Music" on repeat. There were also traditions that each grandchild knew they could count on such as Christmas time and Sunday dinners at Nan's house. Most special to each child were the family summer trips to Port Aransas. Everyone could count on her rattling in the kitchen at 4 AM, as well as her Texas Trash and icebox cookies. She was constantly a support system for each grandchild; attending every sporting event as their biggest fan, covering them with prayer, and giving them Godly wisdom and advice.

As a friend, she was a dependable partner. She was always there to lend an ear, provide meals, offer prayer, go to weekly coffee, and senior play day. She had a true servant's heart; she visited the nursing home weekly, served the church wherever needed, and played the piano. Simply put, she made it her goal to be the hands and feet of Jesus. She had many God-given talents. One that she often used was her gift of craft. She made cross-stitch birth announcement as each grandchild came along, handmade Christmas stockings for every family member, and often sewed dresses and outfits as gifts.

She was truly a remarkable woman of God and will surely be missed by her family, and all of her many friends throughout the Hallettsville community.

Lorene is survived by her children: Susan Skelton Hunt and husband John of Hallettsville, TX; Jim Bob Skelton and wife Michelle of Pflugerville, TX; and Donald Skelton and wife Norma of Hallettsville, TX; six grandchildren: Kelly McDade and wife Crystal of Hutto, TX, Ryan McDade and wife Krystle of Hutto, TX, Trent and Tyler Skelton of Hallettsville, TX, and Jessica and Lindsay Skelton of Pflugerville, TX; and three great grandchildren: Braeden, Kendall, and Kason of Hutto, TX.

Lorene was preceded in death by: her husband Lloyd Skelton; 3 brothers, Marvin, Alvin & Lee Young; and 2 sisters, Marie Henry and Mary Kirk.
