Obituary
Donald McLeod Peterson, of Dallas, passed away February 10, 2011 at the age of 81. He was born on July 9, 1929, and raised in Dallas. He graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1959. Dr. Peterson practiced family medicine for 45 years until his retirement in 2004. His professional accomplishments were impressive given his humble beginnings and he was a legendary advocate of the practice and principles of Osteopathic Medicine.
He was involved with the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association serving as past President and was Physician of the Year in 1986. Dr. Peterson was one of the founding fathers of the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he was a professor of medicine from 1975 through 1991.
He is survived by his wonderful wife Wilma of 58 years; five children Donald Peterson, Jr. and wife Carol, Susan Hartsfield and husband Steve, Dr. Patricia Peterson Fontenot and husband Terry, Esther Watkins and husband Lynn, and David Peterson and wife Ronda; six grandchildren Andi and Kara Peterson, Morgan Hartsfield, Taylor Watkins, Logan and Madison Peterson; two brothers Robert Peterson and Jim Harned and wife Suzanne; one sister Esther McCaskill.
We will miss Donald's tender smile, strong handshake and infinite generosity. He showed us the meaning of kindness, character, respect, strength and determination. Dr. Pete believed in the worth of every individual and did everything he could to further their heart's aspirations.
He was a great physician, husband, brother, friend and teacher but most importantly a great Father.
Visitation and a Celebration of his life will be held Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Restland Funeral Home in the Memorial Chapel in Dallas, from 5-8 PM. Funeral Mass Service will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 11 am at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Hallettsville. In Lieu of flowers , donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Dr. Peterson's memory.
