Derwyn "Ike" Dwight Johnson, Sr., age 57, died on Sunday, February 10, 2008, after a two year battle with cancer.
Born to Harry Eugene Johnson (deceased) and Maudie Marie Botard on May 18, 1950, in Eagle Lake, he grew up in Sheridan, graduating high school there in 1968. He worked for Oilfield Site Services as shop foreman up until the time of his illness. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, welding, and barbecuing for friends and family.
Survivors include: his mother, Maudie Broussard of Sheridan; a sister, Sue High of Sheridan; his children, Tara Johnson Koonce of Shiner, Derwyn "Ike" Johnson, Jr. of Edna, Jesse Johnson of Sheridan; his stepchildren, Robert Denison of Hallettsville, Marvin Denison of Victoria, Marsha Denison Miller of Midland, and Michael Chovanetz of Midland; his grandchildren, Jarryd and Cayley Koonce; his step-grandchildren, Dravon Denison, Chloe and Caleb Denison, Devon and Shawna Miller.
He was preceded in death by: his father, Harry Johnson; his wife, Shirley Freeman Johnson; a daughter, Maura Johnson; and his second wife, Janice Denison Johnson.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008 at 10 a.m. at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville. Burial will follow at Cheetham Cemetery in Sheridan. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 1 to 9 p.m. at Kubena Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Danny Pohl, Claude Hoch, James Hoch, Troy Eason, Melvin Freeman, and Jodie Koonce. Honorary Pallbearers are Louis Botard, Jr. and Gene Rees. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society and to Hospice of South Texas.
