Delores Hermina Muhlstein, 79, of San Antonio, passed away Sunday, January 28, 2018 peacefully with family by her side at Methodist Specialty & Transplant Hospital. She was born February 12, 1938 to Leonard and Maurine Heinsohn Spies in Lavaca County, TX. She married William Frank Muhlstein on September 8, 1956 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Shiloh.

Delores's health issues began in 1954 at the age of 16 after being given penicillin, considered the miracle drug at the time, for a sinus infection. However, the penicillin affected her kidneys over the years, eventually leading to dialysis. As a dialysis patient she disciplined herself to follow a strict diet. Since her treatments were four to six hours three days a week, Delores was not able to travel far from home.

Being confined close to home didn't stop her from enjoying life. She taught Sunday School and was active in the women's church group. She was able to keep house, cook, do handcrafts, and was a meticulous seamstress.

Delores endured this lifestyle for over 42 years exceeding the record of the longest patient on dialysis.

Delores is survived by: one sister Irene Gummelt; four nieces Janis Muehr & husband L.A., LaVerne Eschberger & husband LaNoal, Ruth Muehr & husband Donald, and Debra Pieniazek & husband Jack; and brother-in-law Kenneth Muhlstein.

She was preceded in death by her husband William Muhlstein, parents Leonard and Maurine Spies, and brother-in-law George Gummelt.

Pallbearers: L.A. Muehr, LaNoal Eschberger, Donald Muehr, Roberto Garza, Clayton Muehr, and Adolph Marek.

Honorary Pallbearers: Dr. Paraic J. Mulgrew, MD, the Staff and patients at Fresenius Kidney Care Lockehill, and Marie Moreno.

Funeral Service: 10 am, Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville. Visitation: 5 pm, Wednesday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiant: Rev. Andy Taylor. Memorials: Donor's Choice. Burial: Hallettsville City Cemetery.
