Delores Jean "Jeannie" Sommer

Delores Jean “Jeannie” Sommer,82, of Hallettsville, a dedicated wife, caring mother, treasured grandmother, and adored friend, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026, to be with her heavenly father. She was born on April 29, 1944, in Hallettsville, Texas, to Hubert and Hedwig Spanihel. She was a valued member of her community, a dedicated member of the Catholic Daughters of America and was deeply involved in her faith and community.

Delores attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and later pursued her education at Baldwin Business College. She moved to Houston, where she worked for Great Southern Life Insurance Company. On July 24, 1965, she married Charles Morley Sommer, marking the beginning of a loving partnership that lasted 61 years. Their family grew with the birth of their first child, Chris, in 1966, and later, in 1972, they welcomed their second son, Stephen.

Jeannie's sons were the light of her life, and she cherished her role as a mother. As her family expanded, she embraced her role as a grandmother to her four grandchildren; Tyler, Ashleigh, Madison and Karsyn. She found joy in gardening, baking, canning, and spending time with family and friends. Her home was always filled with warmth and the aroma of homemade treats, which she generously shared with all who visited.

Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents Hubert & Hedwig Spanihel, her sister-in-law Charl Ann Sommer Worley and several aunts and uncles.

Jeannie is survived by: her beloved husband Morley Sommer; her sons, Chris Sommer and Stephen Sommer (wife Tracy); and her grandchildren, Tyler Sommer, Ashleigh Sommer, Madison Sommer and Karsyn Sommer. Her legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Funeral Mass Service: 10 am, Monday, July 20, 2026, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville with Visitation at 9 am, and Rosary starting at 9:30 am. Pallbearers: Tyler Sommer, Bryce Patterson, Palmer Sommer, Ross Sommer, Zane Sommer and Royce Brown. Officiants: Rev. Michael Rother and Rev. Dominic Antwi-Boasiako. Memorials: Hospice of South Texas, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or Queen of Peace Catholic Church (Sweet Home). Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
