Rogers

Deacon Sonny Rogers, 87, of Hallettsville, passed away Aug. 22, 2014. He was born on Sept. 3, 1926 to Walter S. & Bertha Richards Rogers Sr. in Port Arthur. He was baptized in 1926 at St. Mary's Catholic Church. He served in the U. S. Navy at age 17 and subsequently finished high school and one year of college, majoring in pre-med. He married Elaine Placette on July 3, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Port Arthur, and worked at Texaco refinery in 1947, and then DuPont from 1948 until his retirement in 1984. Together they lived in Port Arthur, Groves, Bridge City, Mauriceville, and Hallettsville, Texas. He was a member of the V.F.W.
Sonny and his wife have always been very active in the church, wherever they lived. After he was ordained a deacon in 1994, he served at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stevens Nursing Home, and various jail assignments. He was always a hard worker, be it physical or otherwise.
Deacon Sonny is survived by: his three children, John C. Rogers M.D. & wife Jill of The Woodlands, Mary Urbish & husband Gilbert of Hallettsville, and Becki Nation & husband Rick of Hulbert, OK; nine grandchildren, Heather Lawson & husband Jeff of Houston, Jason Minton & wife Jennifer of Virginia, Shelley Boozer & husband Paul of Cypress, Kristen Rogers M.D. of San Diego, Kaleb Nation of California, Jaden Nation of Dallas, Maddi Nation of OK, Blaise Nation of OK, and Avery Nation of OK; four great grandchildren, Chance Minton, Cole Minton, Riley Boozer, and Gentry Lawson; and two sisters, Genevieve Davis of Buna and Betty Teltschick of Hallettsville.
Deacon Sonny was preceded in death by his parents Walter Smith Rogers Sr. and Bertha Pauline Rogers, and his wife Elaine Rogers.
Funeral Mass Service: 2 pm, Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 6 pm, Sunday, at Sacred Heart Church; and Monday from 7 pm to 12:45 pm at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary: 7 pm, Sunday, at Sacred Heart Church. Officiants: Bishop David Fellhauer and Msgr. John Peters. Pallbearers: Jerry Teltschick, Gilbert Urbish, Tom Collins, Jason Minton, Jeff Lawson, and Paul Boozer. Honorary Pallbearer: David Teltschick. Memorials: Sacred Heart Catholic Church or School, Sacred Heart Seminary Burse, or Hospice of South Texas. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
