David Charles Gummelt, 80, of Hallettsville, passed away April 18, 2018. He was born on Jan 3, 1938 to Eric & Ida Kaase Gummelt. He married Barbora Kutach Fritsch on October 26, 1974. They enjoyed nearly 40 years of marriage before her passing.

David was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Vsetin until its closing in 1969. He then joined Zion Lutheran Church of Sublime.

David began his education at a country school in Vsetin and then went on to graduate from Hallettsville High School in 1957. He served his country in an infantry unit with the National Guard in Gonzales, TX. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant E-6 on Dec 1st, 1965.

David's interests were hunting, fishing, cooking stew, and barbecuing for family functions, and oh yah,"don't mow the lawn on the same day causing dust in the air". He also enjoyed playing dominoes. He enjoyed gardening and was adamant about keeping up with planting according to the signs. He knew where the deer trails were and predicted the weather by how the sun set and the position of the moon.

David worked for the Texas Highway Department and retired on December 30, 1993 after 34 years of service.

David is survived by: sister, Marjorie Ely of Austin; sister-in-law Irene Gummelt of Hallettsville; six nieces, Janis Muehr (L.A.), LaVerne Eschberger (LaNoal), Ruth Muehr (Donald), Debra Pieniazek (Jack), Susan McCormick (Charles), and Joan Carlson (David); and one nephew Glenn Ely.

David was preceded in death; by his wife Barbora, parents, brother George Gummelt, and brother-in-law Robert G. Ely.

Funeral Service: 11 am, Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville. Visitation: 5 pm, Monday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiant: Rev. Herb Beyer. Pallbearers: LaNoal Eschberger, L. A. Muehr, Donald Muehr, Layton Muehr, Charles Hardt, and Ronnie Sevcik. Memorials: Donor's Choice. Burial: Hallettsville City Cemetery.
