Obituary

Charlie Leon Christen, 90, of Shiner, passed away August 21, 2021.  He was born on October 17, 1930, to Augusta Heinsohn Christen & Joseph Christen Sr.  He was raised on the family farm in Moravia area of Lavaca County, Texas.

Charlie married Henrietta Kutach, of the Wied area, on June 14, 1949, in St. Mary's Catholic Church of Hallettsville.  Born to this marriage were 2 children, Charlene Ann, and Charles James who was born on his father's birthday.

The family lived and farmed in the Shiner area and were parishioners of Saints Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Shiner.  He later took on an extra job in Yoakum, as a leather craftsman.  His wife passed away to cancer in 1991.

Charlie continued to work in the leather industry for a total of 33 years.  After retirement, he enjoyed raising a few "pet" cattle.  He also enjoyed watching his favorite teams, the Houston Astros, San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Cowboys.  Playing a challenging game of checkers and pitching washers under the old oak trees were more pastimes he enjoyed.

Charlie believed in being on time, whether it was for church services or his job in Yoakum.  He was also a man of his word.  When asked to accompany his children to a music concert, he would (jokingly) say "When Johnny Cash comes to town".  Well JC did come to Austin along with his wife June and Charlie was there.  Keeping his word and enjoying it in the 5 th row of center stage!

Charlie was known as an easy-going reserved man.  He learned more by listening.  When hail was beating down his new corn crops, he simply looked through the window and lowered his head saying, "looks like corn planting time again".  Any paddles on his children's behinds were well deserved!

A man small in stature but "big" in so many ways to his loving family --- that was Charlie.

Charlie is survived by; son Charles Christen and daughter Charlene Morris & husband Lowell.

Charlie was preceded in death by: wife Henrietta; parents; 2 brothers, Melvin Sr. & Joe Christen; and 6 sisters, Clara Zinke, Willie Mae Lewandowski, Christina Ludwig, Helen Coldeway, Evelyn Doubrava and Rosalie Drexler.

Funeral Service: 10 am, Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at Kubena Funeral Home of Hallettsville; with Visitation starting at 9 am; and Rosary starting at 9:30 am. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials: donor's choice. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
