Obituary

Carole Ann Whitley age 71 of San Antonio, TX passed into eternal rest Tuesday, March 11, 2014. She was born December 24, 1942 in Columbus, Texas to Ralph and Dulcie "Sity" Whitley of Hallettsville.

Carole was baptized and became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hallettsville. In 1960 she graduated from Hallettsville High School, in 1964 from Southwest Texas State and then earned her Master's Degree from Prairie View A&M. This teaching/coaching degree led her to places like Palacios, Port Aransas, Rockdale and San Antonio, but her greatest joy in teaching was when she taught in Hawaii. After sharing her talents for 35 years with so many students, Carole retired.

Many will remember Carole as their swimming teacher and the lifeguard at The Hallettsville City Pool where she continued teaching and caring for children.

After retirement her care free nature turned to traveling, cruising, and spending time with her nieces and nephews and their families. She joined the staff of Crystal Travel Agency in San Antonio as a part-time employee. Carole has been a member of Ohana O Hawaii since 1997, where she has served on the Board for many years, currently as the Chairman. She has been very active in all of Ohana's events, fundraisers and charitable events which in turn contributed to the Food Bank of Hawaii.

In 1999 Carole became a member of the HULA HALAU OHANA ELIKAPEKA or THE DANCE SCHOOL OF THE HOUSE OF ELIZABETH. In 2001 Aunty Liz gave her a hawaiian name KAINOA--meaning blue water. She danced one hula--PUPU HINEE. She was an ukelele member of the GUNFUNIT BAND, but she refused to sing. She also played a TAHITIAN DRUM CALLED A TO ' ERE when the dance troupe performed. She was still a member of HHOE until the end. She loved Hawaii and made many friends when she lived there. Her final gift to life was that she was an organ donor.

Carole is survived by her sister Mary Whitley Kocian and husband Ray of Caldwell, TX and their children Jennifer Kocian and Timothy Kocian, great nieces Halle Kocian and Kennedy Kocian and great nephew Brody Kocian.
