Bessie A. Kouba, 90, of Hallettsville, passed away May 2, 2009. She was born on November 9, 1918 to John J. & Annie Barton Matula near St. Mary's Community in Lavaca County, Texas. She married Ben S. Kouba on February 11, 1941 at St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a member of KJZT, and St John the Baptist Catholic Church of Koerth.

Bessie is survived by: son Benedict Kouba & wife Lillie of Columbus; daughter Sister Colette Kouba of Hallettsville; brother Leon Matula & wife Helen of Houston; 2 sisters, Margaret Novosad of Columbus, and Mary Hohensee & husband Calvin of Wharton; 2 grandchildren, David Kouba and Teri Munoz; and 2 great grandchildren, James Kouba and Aiden Munoz.

Bessie was preceded in death by: husband Ben on January 22, 1972; parents; brother John W. Matula; and 2 sisters, Justina Ulcak and Annie Kendziora.

Service: 11 am, Monday, May 4, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Koerth. Visitation: 3 pm, Sunday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosary: 6 pm, Sunday at Kubena Funeral Home. Officiate: Rev. Charles Sonnier. Pallbearers: Gary Matula, Daniel Wick, Arthur Wick, Dwayne Drozd, Gilbert Kouba, and Eugene Ulcak. Burial: Koerth Catholic Cemetery. Memorials: St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church or School, and Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sweet Home.
