August "Gus" Ulcak, 89, of Hallettsville, was called to be with the Lord his Savior on Saturday, September 16, 2017. He was born to Ed. J. and Frances (Smirak) Ulcak on December 04, 1927 in Hallettsville, TX. Gus graduated from Hallettsville High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force in July 1946 to serve during World War II. During his service he achieved the rank of Sargent. He was a member of the American Legion. Following his time in the service for his country, Gus went on to obtain his bachelor's degree from Southwest Texas State University in 1953. After working for a short while in Houston, he came back to Hallettsville to farm and ranch with his father.

Gus was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church and then St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was a man of great faith, teaching high school religion classes at St. Anthony's for a number of years. He was a member of the St. Isadore Society, Legion of Mary, Catholic Family Fraternal of Texas (KJZT) and Catholic Life.

On August 13, 1966, Gus married Lucille Mary Nolen at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Yoakum, TX. Together they worked in the farming and ranching business. Farming and ranching was Gus' passion. He loved to till the soil to grow corn and other crops.   He also loved to ranch cattle. Gus combined the two for several years by grinding his own feed and feeding out the calves for sale.

Gus is survived by: his wife Lucille of 51 years; 3 sons, Chris Ulcak & wife Elisa, Greg Ulcak, and Sam Ulcak & wife Jenny; daughter Christana Welker & husband Jason; 10 grandchildren, Rebecca and Mathew (Chris); Clarissa, Teresa, Andrew and Caren (Greg); Rachel and Nathan (Sam); Abbygail and Cy (Christana); sister Edith Dusek; sister-in-law Angeline Ulcak; and many counsin, nieces and nephews.

Gus was preceded in death by; his parents, and 2 brothers, Leon "Leo" and Henry Ulcak.

Funeral Mass Service: 11 am, Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Hallettsville. Visitation: 5 pm, Thursday at Kubena Funeral Home with Rosary starting at 7 pm. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Pallbearers: his sons Chris, Greg and Sam, son-in-law Jason Welker, grandson Andrew and nephew Stanley Ulcak. Burial: St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Memorials: St. Mary's Catholic Church or St. Jude Children Research Hospital, or charity of your choice.
