Arthur William Spies Jr. (87), of Hallettsville, passed away June 5, 2020. He was born September 23, 1932, to Arthur (Sr.) and Lillie (Hanslik) Spies in Breslau Texas. He was a 1950 graduate of Hallettsville High School, then served and was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1955.
Arthur was a farmer, entrepreneur (most recently proprietor of Hallettsville General Store (for 40 years), an "imaginer," Father, uncle, grandfather, deer hunter, and active member of his community.
At the time of his passing, Arthur was a member of the Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia, TX, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hallettsville, American Legion Post 230, Moulton area KJT, and the Hallettsville Knights of Columbus.
Arthur is survived by: four of his children, Janet Spies (Austin/Hallettsville), Arlene & Allen Becan (Hallettsville), Stephen & Peggy Spies (Austin), Charles (Chuck) & Janie Spies (Katy); nine grandchildren, Sarah (Spies) Banda, Virginia (Spies) Casey, Angela (Spies) Hatfield, John Spies, Theresa Spies, Ashley Becan, Joshua Becan, Jacob Spies and Luke Spies; eight great grandchildren (plus two on the way!); his sister Lillie Loth; and many beloved brothers/sisters in-law, along with many nieces & nephews.
Arthur was predeceased by; his beautiful wife Thelma Spies (2007), daughter Ann Spies (2005), brother Daniel Spies (2005), grandson Andrew Spies (1999), nephew and Godchild Dominic Loth (1998), his parents, and many other family members.
Funeral Mass Service: 1 pm, Tuesday June 9, 2020, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville; with Rosary starting at 12 noon. Visitation: 4 pm, Monday, at Kubena Funeral Home. Pallbearers: Joshua Becan, Luke Spies, John Spies, Robert Pustka, Pat Spies, Brian Spies, Godson Michael Hanslik, and Godson John Barton. Honorary Pallbearers: Godchildren Bev (Hanslik) Hrncir, Dennis Hanslik, and Donna (Hanslik) Baron. Officiant: Msgr. John Peters. Memorials (in lieu of flowers): Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, or a charity of your choice. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
