Obituary

Arnold Frank Bohuslav, 84, of Hallettsville, passed away Jan. 11, 2016. He was born on Sept. 12, 1931 to Bohumil & Lillie Holub Bohuslav in Lavaca County, TX. He was the fourth of seven children including his stepsister. As a young boy, he attended the Komensky School until the tenth grade, when he dropped out to work at the Bohuslav Mill, which was owned and operated by his father. He lived a normal small town life working at the mill.

Arnold was drafted to fight in the Korean War when he was just 21. He arrived at Fort Still, Oklahoma for basic training on December 9, 1952. At basic training he became an anti-aircraft gunner. After training there, they departed to their base in Korea. He spent 18 days on a ship with 3,600 other men. He never was in combat because the war ended 23 days after he arrived. He remained stationed in Korea to follow through his term in the army.

Arnold returned home on November 24, 1954. "I was there for 16 months and 7 long days." After he became reacquainted at home he began to work in the mill, where he just happened to be working behind the counter of the store one day and shook hands with Gene Marie Halata.

After he married Gene Marie on June 12, 1955, he wanted to do custom farm work with his father-in-law. "What better way to learn the trade than to move in with her parents!" He later took over the operation and became a successful farmer. He did custom farm work farming cotton, corn and milo. He even harvested grasses, wildflowers and bluebonnets.

After he retired, he enjoyed spending his time checking his cattle and going to watch surrounding auctions. If he wasn't doing that, then he was either in his garden or watching game shows on TV. He also loved to go out riding through the countryside. He loved helping out his community by donating blood and contributing to the Lavaca County Soil and Water Conservation board, which he retired from after 52 years. He was a member of VFW of Hallettsville, KJT, Knights of Columbus, American Legion of Moulton, and Ascension of our Lord Catholic Church of Moravia. He will be honored to participate in many 21 Gun Salutes and he could always be found at the Moravia and St. John picnics helping fry chicken.

Arnold is survived by: his wife Gene Marie; son Gary Bohuslav & wife Jacki of Sherman, TX; 4 daughters, Rene Matula & husband Mark of Mansfield, TX, Beverly Jansky & husband Patrick of Hallettsville, Jackie Bludau & husband Billy of Hallettsville, and Pam Muenster & husband Darren of Austin; 4 brothers, Marvin, Clarence, Daniel and Franklin Bohuslav; and 10 grandchildren, Garrett Bohuslav, Jami Blackburn, Heather Bohuslav, Lydia Matula, Hannah Matula, Erin Jansky, Emilie Jansky, Alex Bludau, Robbie Muenster, and Logan Muenster.
