Annie Loys Miller was born December 21, 1912 in Provident City to James V. and Myrtle Sarah Fenner Miller. She attended school in Provident City and graduated from Westmorland High School in San Antonio. She married Jesse Lynn Smothers on October 16, 1931. In 1938 Annie Loys began college and her teaching career the same day by taking a teachers examination in the county superintendent's office. Showing her remarkable spirit and dedication, she graduated from Southwest Teachers College, nineteen years later in 1957. She was a well loved and accomplished public school teacher. Known as Mrs. Lynn by her students, she taught at Old Sweet Home, Hope, Witting, Sweet Home, and Hallettsville ISD. She was also a lifelong member of the Retired Teachers Association. Annie Loys was a member of Salem Baptist Church where she faithfully taught Sunday school for some 50 years. An avid outdoorsman, she shared many wonderful times with family and friends, hunting and fishing.
Annie Loys leaves behind her granddaughter Karen Hermes Renger & husband Harvey; her grandson Bernard Hermes; great-grandchildren, Krisha Renger Belz & husband Jeffery, Roddy Renger & wife Angela, Jessica Renger Trozzo & husband Matt, Richard Renger; great-great-grandsons, Jake and Wyatt Belz, and Jace Trozzo; great-great-granddaughter and name sake, Annie Loys Trozzo; and devoted caretaker and friend Johnnie Johnson.
Annie Loys was preceded in death by her first husband of 54 years, Jesse Lynn Smothers, her only child Norma Hermes, her second husband W.H. Burt, her brother Talmage Roddy Jr., and her sister Eddie Clair Brown.
Service: 10:30 am, Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Kubena Funeral Home. Visitation: 3 pm, Sunday at Kubena Funeral Home; with the family receiving visitors from 5pm to 6:30pm that Sunday. Officiate: Rev. Steve Smothers. Pallbearers: Jeffery Belz, Gary Brown, Bobby Brown, Donald Leopold, Paul Roddy, and Matt Trozzo. Honorary Pallbearers: Edward Hermes, Leonard Perkins, Harvey Renger, Richard Renger, Roddy Renger, John Satsky, and Pat Bollom. Burial: Hallettsville City Cemetery. Memorials (in lieu of flowers): Hospice of South Texas at 404 N. Texana, Hallettsville, TX 77964; or Dr. Harvey Renger Sr. Scholarship Fund at 491 CR 206, Hallettsville, TX 77964.
