Anne Schubert

Anne Rhodes, 92, was a lifelong resident of Hallettsville, died April 13, 2007. She was born on Oct. 22, 1914 to Adolph & Rosa Schindler Schubert in Hallettsville. On July 16 1939 she married Vernon Elton Rhodes. They enjoyed a long life together in love and partnership, spending many hours together taking care of the homestead, where Anne grew up. Anne & Vernon took great pride and joy in their three grandchildren. They shared their love of God, family, and country with them and everyone who entered into their lives.
Through the years, Anne worked at Piggly Wiggly (clerk & manager), and as a bookkeeper for Gindlers' in Hallettsville. When she retired she started a new career in historical research. Through many partnerships with Dorothy Bujnoch and Frank Fisher, she helped publish "Czech Footprints Across Lavaca County", vols. 1 & 2; "Hallettsville, Past and Present"; "St. Mary's Parish"; "Hallettsville and Its Volunteer Fire Department"; and a history of the City Cemetery Association; as well as researching several other historical projects in Lavaca County.
She was active in the Sacred Heart Church Choir, Catholic Daughters of Americas, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, and the American Heart Association, holding various offices through her years of membership. She was a charter member of the Czech Heritage Society of Texas, member of the Lavaca County Czech Heritage Society, and the Lavaca County Historical Commission. Anne was elected Citizen of the Year in 2004 by the Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce.
Anne was preceded in death by: Husband Vernon; daughter Verne Mary Rhodes; parents Adolph & Rosa Schindler Schubert; 5 brothers, John, Joe, Louis, Alphonse, and Charles; and 4 sisters, Regina Ebert, Angela (Gayle) Brooks, Agatha Portis, and Elizabeth Odell.
Anne is survived by: daughter Sharon Newsom & husband Daniel of Wharton; 3 grandchildren, Christine Searle & husband Paul, Jennifer Braeuer, and Russell Braeuer; 5 step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
Service: 1 pm, Sunday, April 15, 2007 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Visitation: 2 pm, Saturday at Kubena Funeral Home. Rosaries: 7 pm, Saturday at Kubena Funeral Home, and 12:30 pm, Sunday at Sacred Heart Church. Officiate: Rev. John Peters. Burial: Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Memorials: Friench Simpson Memorial Library, American Heart Association, or Sacred Heart Church. Pallbearers: Russell Braeuer, Frank Fisher, Charles Odell, Kenneth Schubert, Bill Schubert, and Paul Searle. Honorary Pallbearers: Daniel Newsom Sr., Alton Schubert, Charles Schubert, Bob Brooks, Rodney Brooks, Leroy Schubert, Vicki Rhodes, Earl Odell, Danny Odell, and numerous family members.
