Alice Sue Garner Hermes, 78, of Ezzell, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2026. Sue was born to James and Virginia Garner in Hallettsville, Texas on June 25, 1947. She married Alton Hermes on September 17, 1966. They were blessed with 59 years together.
Sue grew up in a farm and ranch family. The family loved to rodeo and were very active in the rodeo community. After graduating high school, she went to Baldwin Business School in Yoakum. She worked for Schwartz Law Office until the birth of their first child, Butch.
Sue devoted herself to being a full-time mother, and within a few years she and Alton welcomed four children. Her family was her greatest joy and proudest accomplishment. Though Sue had many stories and achievements throughout her life, nothing meant more to her than raising her family.
Together, Alton and Sue opened Hermes Spreading Service in Ezzell as they began building their young family. In the years that followed, they expanded their business with the addition of Hermes Feed Mill with Edward and Buddy Hermes. She was the bookkeeper and secretary. She later continued those roles with Hermes Fertilizer. She loved the farm, the land, and every animal that came with it.
As Sue grew older, her days often ended with a 4-wheeler ride alongside Alton and her collie, Tip, checking on the cows and the fields they tended together. And at night, she loved nothing more than settling in to watch the rodeo.
Sue leaves behind a legacy of love that lives on in her husband Alton and in the hearts of her four children; Lawrence-Butch (Susan) Hermes, Jr, Patricia (Robert) Dumbeck, Patrick Hermes and James Hermes (Sherry Beck). She was a proud grandmother to Tia, Megan, Dalton, Breann, Jessie and Jonah; and a great grandmother to Nick, Jack, Drew, Zach, Eve, Winnie, McKenna and Kollin. She is also lovingly remembered by her brothers, Ricky (Kathy) Garner, Jimmy (Tammy) Garner and Bobby (Alice) Garner.
Sue touched the lives of all who knew her with her kindness, her strength, and her gentle spirit. Her presence brought warmth to every room, and her absence will be felt deeply by those who loved her. She now joins in eternal rest her sister Virginia Ann Garner Cobb and her parents James & Virginia Garner, who welcomed her home with open arms.
Special thanks to Yoakum Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Hospice of South Texas – Janice Stevens, Father Matt, Father Dominic, Sharon Jemelka and Audrey Loos for their weekly visits to pray and bring communion.
