Obituary

Alice "Margaret" Evans, 88, of Houston passed away on May 5, 2020. She was the second of six children born to Harlem Howard Long and Alice Gold Long in Yoakum on November 2, 1931.

Margaret's carefree childhood days were spent on the family farm. As a teen she met the love of her life Roy Edward Evans at the local county fair. They were married 5 days after her eighteenth birthday in Hallettsville on November 7, 1949. Their union lasted 65 years until Roy passed away in 2014. The couple moved to Houston where they raised their two children; a son Larry and daughter Kathy. She was a cafeteria worker at Mt. Houston Elementary school.

Margaret/Mama/Mama-Nanny was a dignified lady in every sense of the word. She was the best cook and baker bar none. You could always count on a pot of pinto beans, corn bread, greens and fried chicken in her kitchen. Southern soul food was her specialty. At every meal there was a pitcher of sweet tea on the table. That drink was brewed with real tea leaves; you would never find a tea bag in Mama's kitchen. Her chocolate cake, pecan pie, and lemon and chocolate meringue pies were legendary. On Thanksgiving her cornbread dressing and hot yeast rolls were outrageously delicious. The swing set in the backyard was a favorite place for all the grandchildren. Mama-Nanny would sit under the shade tree at the picnic table and smile as she watched her babies laugh and play. Every visit ended with a goody bag filled with Mama's tea cakes.

Margaret was a born gardener with a green thumb for all plant life. Her yard was always the most beautiful on the street full of bright flowers and shrubbery of various types. She was also a skilled seamstress who sewed her children's clothing for years.

Margaret was also a music lover. She enjoyed country songs and gospel hymns. She was a devout Christian in the Church of Christ faith. Margaret was a member of the Cy-Fair Church of Christ of Cypress. We will always treasure the way you gave unselfishly to your family and showed us how we were cherished in so many ways.

Margaret is survived by; her daughter Kathy Peters & husband August of Montgomery, sister Dorothy "Deanie" Green & husband Vernon of Sam Rayburn, brother Ray Long & wife Bobbie of Victoria, and sister-in-law Darlene Long of Pearland. Margaret is also survived by her grandchildren; Laura Bell of Hockley, Angela Woodard & husband Rusty of Hockley, Tiffany Carson & husband Michael of Tomball, Kelly Crowell & husband John of Katy, Jhon Peters & wife Tracy of Kingwood and Rebecca Evans of Houston; 8 great granddaughters, Rachael McConnell, Danielle Benton, Haille Polichnia, Tyana Hudspeth, Bethany Bell, Jewelia Bell, Fairyn Carson, and Lillian Clayton; 3 great grandsons, Rusty Woodard, Gary Woodard and Evan Carson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Roy, her son Larry, her parents, and brothers, Carl, James and Marvin.

Margaret was a loving daughter, sister, friend, wife, mother and grandmother who was loved and will be greatly missed by all.

Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, daughter Kathy would like to announce a Celebration of Margaret's life will be held at a later date to be determined.
