Obituary

Alfred John Schneider Sr., 90, of Hallettsville, passed away May 6, 2015 in Detar Hospital in Victoria, TX.

Al was born in Old Sweet home TX August 23, 1924 to John and Mary (Janak) Schneider. He married Joyce Renger on April 17, 1955 in Hallettsville. Al was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hallettsville and had served on the administrative board.

When Al was 5 years old he and his family moved from Sweet Home to Hallettsville, TX. He attended Sacred Heart School from 1st to 9th grade and then went to Hallettsville High School from 10th to 12th grade.

Al enlisted in the U.S. Navy when he graduated from High School. He was 6'3, 110 lbs. and because he was too thin they wouldn't let him in the Navy, so he talked his doctor into passing him for the physical. He started training in June 1942 in San Diego, CA and was assigned to the U.S.S. Colorado in August as an electrician. Their ship served as support to the ground troops on the Island of Tinian. The Colorado was attacked by the Japanese kamikaze and the ship suffered damage and casualties.

After his service in the Navy, Al worked in Hallettsville as a car salesman at C.H. Kelley. Then Al worked for Alcoa in Point Comfort, TX. He then worked for Shell Oil Company in Sealy TX and then moved back to Hallettsville and worked for Shell in Sheridan, TX. He retired from Shell after 31 years of service.

Al enjoyed golf in his earlier years and was a member of the Hallettsville golf Association. He made two hole-in-ones during his golf career. He also enjoyed Gardening.

Al enjoyed his children and grandchildren as they gathered on many occasions at their home. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Joyce making trips with relatives to Las Vegas, Branson MO, Louisiana (Coushatta), and the beach with the children and grandchildren. His favorite trip was to the TX Hill Country where he and Joyce would venture at least once a year to get peaches. Al and Joyce loved to go out to eat. Snow crab legs were one of his favorite dishes.

Al will be dearly missed as he had many stories and lots of history to share with us along with spending time with us just visiting.
