Viola Tracy Marek Holly

Viola Tracy Marek Holly, 81, of Hallettsville, died Jan. 30, 2009, peacefully at Stevens Nursing Center after long bout with Kidney failure. She was born on June 19, 1927 to Frank & Josephine (Sophie) Repka Marek in Hallettsville; she is the last survivor of her family. She married Alfonse A. Holly on Feb. 26, 1946 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hallettsville. She was a member of Vsetin Christian Sisters, S.P.J.S.T., American Legion & V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and Vsetin Czech Moravian Brethren Church.

Viola had a warm heart, was very patient, never complained about anything, never turned anyone away, and would give you the “shirt off her back”. She lived a simple life.

Her joys were quilting in her earlier years, gardening, working in her flower beds, going to Senior Citizens socializing with her friends. She loved to sit on her porch or in the back yard and watch the animals. But most of all she loved to cook and bake. There was never a time when you went to her house that she didn’t offer you anything sweet or give you food to take home. Viola loved to “piddle” in the kitchen, and make one of those good homemade chocolate pies.

In her early 30’s, she worked at Appelt’s Cafe in Hallettsville. In 1958, her last child was born and Ms Billie Appelt bought a play pen for Viola so she could continue working. She worked later at Grays Dairy Hart in Hallettsville.

Then in 1981, Viola decided to pursue what she loved to do best, bake for people. She managed the kitchen for bingo on Tuesday nights at the American Legion Hall in Hallettsville. In February 2008, her health started to fail so she decided to “give it up”, after more than 25 years.

Viola is survived by: son Bobby Lee Holly & wife Dolores of Victoria; 2 daughters Shirley Ann Kalmus & husband August of Sugarland, and Diane Hadley & husband Kelly of Hallettsville; 10 grandchildren, Doyle Bradford Holly & wife Kristy of Victoria, Jeff Eric Holly & wife Amy of Victoria, Scott Christopher Holly of Rocksprings, TX, Troy Keith Kalmus & wife Jackie of Sugarland, Jason Eric Kalmus & wife Lindsey of Missouri City, Jeremy Jay Kalmus & wife Tiffany of Richmond; and Phelan Duncan Scott & wife Robin, Tucker Newlin Scott & wife Dawn, Trevor Ford Scott & wife Teddi, and Holly Marie Scott all of Hallettsville; 15 great grandchildren, Taylor Kay Kalmus, Tyler Jay Kalmus, Eric Alois Kalmus, Chase Ward Kalmus, Dylan Keith Kalmus, Dawson Bradford Holly, Karson Henry Holly, Brady Lee Holly, Brooke Elizabeth Holly, Cullen Thomas Scott, Blair Collette Holly, Morgan Traci Scott, Teagan Thomas Scott, Braden Tucker Scott, Brenna Claire Scott; and step great grandchild Caroline Hrncir.
