Charlie Othell Clements Speed, of Hallettsville, went to be with her Lord on August 24, 2012, at the age of 94 years and 6 months. Othell was born on February 22, 1918 in Covington, Texas, the youngest of eleven children born to the late Edward and Charlotta Overton Simmons.
Othell was raised (as many children were in that day) in a home where work ethics and respect for others was expected and taught. Her father was a farmer so she worked in the fields picking cotton and doing other farm chores. The church played a very big role in her life, not only as religious training but also as a basis for social life. She often tells her children of the fun she and her siblings had walking to and from church with their friends and the one-room school she attended in Covington.
At the age of 19 Othell married Ollie Clements from Blum. This union produced three children, Sharlotte, Dennis Ray and Debbie. After 44 years of marriage and the death of Ollie, Othell met and married Bob Speed. When they first married they said that they would feel blessed to have a few good years together as they were no longer “spring chickens.” God blessed them with 21 wonderful years before Bob passed on.
Othell spent the last five years at Stevens Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Hallettsville, which she referred to as her second home. She always told her children that was where she wanted to live, as she worked many years in this nursing facility, as a CNA and Activity Director. She loved her residents and her job….and in the final days of her life her family had the opportunity to see the impact she had on the current staff at Stevens and how much they loved her and cared for her…as she loved them.
Othell was a very special lady with a lot of friends. Some called her Charlie, but most knew her by Othell. She loved to share stories of her younger years and always said they didn’t have much in the way of material things, but there was always food on the table and lots of good times. Othell lived a long and blessed life and said if she had it to all over again, she wouldn’t change a thing. What a wonderful testament to her faith and love of Christ and family! Othell was a charter member of the Sweeney Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Othell is survived by: 2 daughters, Sharlotte Botard & husband Louis of Angleton, TX, and Debbie Stastny & husband James of Victoria, TX; son Dennis Clements & wife Vickie of Three Rivers, TX; 8 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.
