Lou Kubena

(Betty) Lou Kubena, 76, went to be with her Lord on March 18, 2011, with her family by her side. She was born June 1, 1934 to Eugene F. & Eva Henigan Brent in Gregg County, Texas. She married Robert A. Kubena on May 7, 1955 in Denton, Texas. Lou was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Hallettsville where she served as music director for over 40 years.

Lou graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Texas and later graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in English with a minor in Music. She also earned a masters degree in 1973 from University of Houston-Victoria. Lou’s two greatest passions in life were teaching and music. Lou touched many lives as she taught music at Hallettsville Elementary School for 22 years. She also taught kindergarten and special education for several years.

Lou shared her passion for music with her church where she served as music director, organist, pianist, chantor and choir director for over 40 years. Lou was chosen to sing in the papal choir which performed when Pope John Paul II visited San Antonio in 1987.

Lou was a member of Catholic Daughters of America, Christian Mothers Society, Beta Sigma Phi, Hallettsville Garden Club, the “Bridgettes”, “Tuesday Bridge Club”, and Texas State Teachers Association. She served as the first woman president of the Sacred Heart School Advisory Council.

Lou’s family always came first. She left many joyous memories for her husband of 55 years, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild. She thoroughly enjoyed playing bridge with her great friends. She also loved riding horses and vacationing in the mountains.
